A beneficial effect of dietary phospholipid (PL) supplementation in purified diets in terms of survival, growth, resistance to stress tests, and occurrence of deformities has been demonstrated in larval and juvenile stages of various species of fish and crustaceans. The exact determination of PL requirements in larvae is complicated due to the difficulty to bio-encapsulate PL in live prey. Furthermore, the great variety in purity and composition of the PL sources, and the experimental conditions (such as diet formulation and extent of co/prefeeding with live food) makes it difficult to compare requirements determined with artificial diets. Larval stages are extremely sensitive to a dietary PL deficiency and require higher levels of dietary PL than... |

For several reasons, the harvest stage is most important in aquaculture. Not properly managed, it may diminish efforts invested throughout the whole culture cycle. This operation consists in harvesting and in killing the fish for marketing purposes and must be achieved with care to optimizing the final quality of the product in terms of flavor, sanitary aspects and preparing it well for processing. Analysing the numerous complaints expressed by endusers concerning the quality of cultured salmon demonstates that the harvest stage is the main cause of these failures. Among the failures reported, we can quote the problems of "gaping" (disconnection of the myotomes in the fillets), of brown spots (spotlights of blood), of soft texture, discoloration and early... |

The aerobic bacterial flora in the gut of turbot larvae and their influence on larval survival was examined. Two turbot experiments were run with six replicates each time. Large variation, from 0% up to 44%, was observed in the survival percentage of turbot larvae. There was no correlation between the number of bacteria present in the gut of turbot larvae and the larval survival rate. During both experiments, all replicates followed nearly the same rate of bacterial development in the gut of turbot larvae going from circa 102 CFU larva-1 just before first feeding at day 3 post hatch to 105 CFU larva-1 at day 9 post hatch. In total, 127 bacterial isolates from 12... |

Weekly spawn and hatching rates of Clarias gariepinus and Heterbranchus longifilis were determined in earthen ponds during the rainy and dry seasons. There was a significant increase in spawn weight from the 2nd to the 7th week after stocking C. gariepinus brood fish (p<0.05). In H. longifilis; the increase in spawn weight was significant from the 4th to the 9th weeks (P<0.05). A positive correlation was found between spawn weight and female broodfish weight from the 4th to the 9th weeks for both species. The best hatching rates were obtained during the 7th week for C. gariepinus, and in the 8th week for H. longifilis. Rainy season trials gave better results in both species than in the dry season, while only C. gariepinus produced hatchable... |

Different pH levels of water in the incubation and larviculture of 'curimbatá' (Prochilodus lineatus) were tested to evaluate the effect of this variable on the survival and development of eggs and larvae. During incubation, pH of 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 8.5 was tested. To observe the effects of pH on larvae with different hatchery histories, the following experimental design was utilised (pH incubation - pH larviculture): L 6-6; L 6-7; L 7-6; L 7-7; L 7-8; L 8-7; L 8-8; L 8.5-7, and L 8.5-8.5. At pH 5.0 and four hours after incubation, an almost total mortality of incubated eggs was seen. Eggs incubated at pH 6.0 to 8.5 had similar fertilization and survival rates at the end of incubation, although eggs and larvae incubated at pH 6.0 had a smaller... |

Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus acclimated to 27 °C were then held at 19, 23, 27 (control), 31 and 35 °C, and were examined for non-specific cellular and humoral responses after 12–96 h. Total leucocyte count decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19 and 23 °C after 48 and 96 h, and when transferred to 35 °C over 12–96 h, respectively. Respiratory burst decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19, 31 and 35 °C over 24–96 h, whereas phagocytic activity and phagocytic index decreased significantly when fish were transferred to low temperatures (19 and 23 °C) and high temperatures (31 and 35 °C) over 12–96 h. Lysozyme activity decreased significantly when fish were transferred to 19 °C after 12–96 h, but increased... |

It is generally accepted, that a major constraint in the further development of marine fish and crustacean aquaculture, is the variable quality of eggs and larvae used for the hatchery-production of fry. Nonetheless, valid criteria to evaluate optimal egg quality have not been identified yet. Instead, particular indicators, are used, e.g. the fertilization and hatching rate, overall culture success during the first rearing period, etc., but these are not totally objective because hatchery-specific conditions may interfere. The biochemical composition of the egg may be one of the possible determinants of egg quality, which can be evaluated on a more objectie basis. In this respect, studied have been initiated to analyze in freshly-released eggs, the levels... |

It is over 30 years since the development of fish tissue cultures led to the first confirmation of a viral infection in fish. Since that time, tissue cultures and, more usually, monolayer cell cultures, have been developed from a large number of fish species and have enabled the isolation from a large number of fish species and have enabled the isolation and study of 30 or so viral infections of fish, predominantly those of freshwater, catadromous and anadromous species, and particularly temperate species in the northern hemisphere. However, evidence for numerous other viral infections in fish has also been obtained without successful virus isolation through the visualisation of virus particles by electron microscopy or through experimental transmission of... |
